I
was blessed with the good fortune to be born near and raised in the
remote, breathtaking Manti-La Sal National Forest in southeastern
Utah, where my father was the forest ranger. This weekend I took a
trip back to my class reunion. One of the benefits of being raised
in a small town is that when there is a parade all you have to do is
show up and you are in the parade.
After
riding my bike in the parade, I rode a mile to the Baker Ranger
Station where I was raised. Now that I look back on my experience I
appreciate all that my parents taught me about work. It was this
work ethic that helped me create the opportunities that I have been
blessed with. I look to my mother for her diligence in creating jobs
and also the follow up that taught me the life skills that have been
so important.
I
know that for some parents it seems easier just to do that job
yourself, but the benefit for the child is lost. I have had the
opportunity to present segments both on the “Today Show”
and on the “Home Show” on creating and following through
delegating jobs to kids.
Both
of these segments will give you ideas on what to delegate as well as
how to follow up the delegation.
