Light for My Path All I Really Need to Know I Learned from the Scripturesby Kathryn Grant |
I remember being delighted when I first read the beloved book by Robert Fulghum, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Its focus on the simple truths that really matter resonated with many people.
One day it occurred to me that the same is true of the scriptures: everything we need to know we can learn from them.1 So with grateful acknowledgment to Mr. Fulghum, and knowing I’m not the first (and won’t be the last) to do an adaptation, here is “All I Really Need to Know I Learned from the Scriptures.”
In the beginning God
created the heaven and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)
Adam fell that men might
be; and men are, that they might have joy.
(2 Nephi 2:25)
I know that my Redeemer
lives.
(Job 19:25)
Love the Lord with all
your heart, might, mind, and strength.
(Deut. 10:12,
Mark 12:30,
D&C 59:5)
Trust in the Lord with
all your heart.
(Proverbs 3:5,
Isaiah 26:3)
Become as a little child.
(Matthew 18:3)
Lose your life to find
it.
(Matthew 16:25,
Matthew 16:28 JST)
Hold to the rod.
(1 Nephi 8:24)
Search the scriptures.
(John 5:39,
Alma 17:2)
Humility brings grace and
strength.
(1 Peter 5:5,
Ether 12:27)
Thank the Lord in all
things.
(D&C 59:7,
Ephesians 5:20)
Rejoice in the Lord
always.
(Philippians 4:4,
D&C 128:22)
Hold on to God’s
promises.
(Hebrews 10:23)
Do justly, love mercy,
and walk humbly with your God.
(Micah 6:8)
Seek diligently to turn
hearts.
(D&C 2:2,
D&C 98:16,
D&C 138:47 – 48,
Malachi 4:6,
3 Nephi 25:6)
Let temple work continue
on and not cease.
(D&C 127:4,
D&C 128:22)
Be strong and of good
courage, for the Lord is with you.
(Joshua 1:9)
For God hath not given us
the spirit of fear; but of power, and of
love, and of a sound mind.
(2 Timothy 1:7)
I can do all things
through Christ, who gives me strength.
(Philippians 4:13)
Nothing can separate us
from the love of God.
(Romans 8:35-39)
For God so loved the
world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.
(John 3:16)
1. “We often hear it said that the scriptures have the answers to all of our questions. Why is this so? It is not that the scriptures contain a specific answer to every question.... We say that the scriptures contain the answers to every question because the scriptures can lead us to every answer.” (Elder Dallin H Oaks, quoted in “Using Scriptures to Meet Personal Needs”)
